What Time Is It Right Now?
The clock above shows the exact time with seconds in your current time zone, refreshed every second from your device. Below you'll find today's day of the week, an hours-from-now calculator, military-to-standard time conversions, and answers to the most-asked time questions on Google.
What Day Of The Week Is It?
Today is โ, โ.
The Gregorian calendar (introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII) is the international civil calendar. In the ISO 8601 standard, the first day of the week is Monday; in the United States and Canada the convention is Sunday. What day of the week is today always depends on which standard you follow โ both are shown above.

Military Time (24-Hour Clock) Conversion
Military time โ also called the 24-hour clock โ runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (one minute before midnight). To convert military time to standard 12-hour time, subtract 12 from any hour greater than 1200 and append PM; for hours from 0100โ1159, just append AM (with 0000 being 12:00 AM).
| Military | Standard | Spoken |
|---|---|---|
| 0000 | 12:00 AM (midnight) | "Zero hundred hours" |
| 0600 | 6:00 AM | "Oh six hundred" |
| 1200 | 12:00 PM (noon) | "Twelve hundred hours" |
| 1700 | 5:00 PM | "Seventeen hundred" |
| 1800 | 6:00 PM | "Eighteen hundred" |
| 1900 | 7:00 PM | "Nineteen hundred" |
| 2100 | 9:00 PM | "Twenty-one hundred" |
| 2359 | 11:59 PM | "Twenty-three fifty-nine" |
So what is 1700 in military time? It's 5:00 PM. What is 1800 in military time? 6:00 PM. 1900 hours is what time? 7:00 PM. And what is 9:00 PM in 24-hour clock time? 2100 hours.
AM and PM Explained
What does AM and PM stand for? AM stands for ante meridiem โ Latin for "before midday". PM stands for post meridiem, "after midday". The two periods split the day evenly:
- What is 12 AM? Midnight โ the start of a new day (00:00).
- What is 12 PM? Noon โ exactly the middle of the day (12:00).
- What is noon? The instant the Sun crosses the local meridian โ historically when shadows are shortest. Noon time in civil clocks is 12:00 PM.
- What is dusk? The period of partial darkness between sunset and full night, when the Sun is between 0ยฐ and 18ยฐ below the horizon.
The meaning of AM and PM matters most around midnight and noon, where 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM regularly cause scheduling confusion. When in doubt, write "12:00 noon" or "12:00 midnight".
What Is an Atomic Clock?
An atomic clock measures time by the resonant frequency of atoms โ typically caesium-133, whose ground-state hyperfine transition is defined as exactly 9,192,631,770 Hz. Atomic clocks underpin Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and the GPS system, drifting less than one second every 100 million years. Standards labs in Boulder, Braunschweig, Tokyo and Paris contribute to International Atomic Time (TAI), the master scale.
What Is Zulu Time?
Zulu time (Z) is military and aviation shorthand for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) โ the time at the prime meridian (0ยฐ longitude). Pilots and military operations use Zulu time so coordinated activities anywhere on Earth share one unambiguous timestamp. It is also called GMT in informal use, though strictly GMT is a time zone and UTC is the time standard.

What Is Time?
"What is time?" is one of the oldest questions in philosophy and one of the deepest in physics. Operationally, time is what we measure with clocks โ the parameter against which change is described. In Einstein's special relativity, time is one axis of a four-dimensional spacetime, not absolute but observer-dependent. In everyday use, the time now simply means the current reading of the local civil clock, anchored to UTC and adjusted for your time zone.
Frequently Asked
What is the correct time now?
Your device's clock above is synchronised by your operating system against NIST/PTB time servers โ for most consumers it's accurate to a few hundredths of a second.
