Each row shows one major global exchange. The Status column updates live based on:
- Whether it's a weekday (Monday–Friday) in that exchange's local time zone
- Whether the current local time falls within the regular trading session
- For Asian exchanges, whether you're in the lunch-break window
Holidays are not currently detected — if a national holiday is in effect, the table will show "Open" but the exchange will actually be closed. Always cross-reference the specific exchange's official calendar before trading.
Why Markets Are Closed Today (Common Reasons)
- Weekend — every major stock market is closed Saturday and Sunday.
- National holiday — each exchange observes its country's federal holidays. The US has 10 market holidays per year; the UK has 8; Japan has 16.
- Half-day / early close — US markets close at 1:00 PM ET on the day before Independence Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve.
- Force majeure — rarely, markets close for natural disasters or systemic events (e.g., Hong Kong closes for typhoon signal 8+; US markets closed 9/11–9/14 in 2001 and 10/29 in 2012 for Hurricane Sandy).
