Tipping FAQ

What is the standard tip in the US?

Sit-down restaurants in the US typically expect 18–20% of the pre-tax bill. 15% is considered the bare minimum; 20–25% rewards excellent service. Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Delivery: 15–20%, minimum $3.

Do you tip in Europe?

Service is usually included in European bills (look for 'service compris' in France, 'coperto/servizio' in Italy). Rounding up or adding 5–10% is normal for good service — full 20% US-style tipping is not expected and may feel excessive.

Should you tip in Japan?

No — tipping is not part of Japanese culture and can actually be considered rude. Excellent service is the baseline expectation, and many staff will refuse or chase you down to return the money.

How do you split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. Our calculator does this automatically — enter the bill, the tip %, and how many people are paying.
