How Tax Brackets Work
Income tax is marginal in all four countries โ only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your entire income. Example for the US 2026 single filer:
- First $11,925 โ taxed at 10% = $1,193
- $11,925 โ $48,475 โ taxed at 12% = $4,386
- $48,475 โ $103,350 โ taxed at 22% = $12,073
- etc.
That's why someone "in the 22% bracket" doesn't pay 22% on all their income โ their effective rate is much lower.
