Cost of Living Index — 40 Cities

CityIndex (NYC=100)Vs NYC

Composite index of housing, food, transport, services and goods. Indicative figures for general comparison — actual costs vary by neighbourhood, lifestyle, and date.

How to Use This Calculator

Pick the city you currently live in and a target city. Enter your current salary and the result shows the equivalent salary you'd need in the target city for the same purchasing power.

The figure assumes "same lifestyle" — same housing type, same dining habits, same commute. If you'd downsize when moving (smaller apartment in an expensive city), your real required salary will be lower. If you'd upgrade, higher.

FAQ

How is cost of living calculated?

We use a composite index covering housing (40% weight), groceries (15%), transport (10%), utilities (10%), restaurants (10%), and general services/goods (15%). Index 100 = New York City baseline.

Why do cost-of-living estimates vary between websites?

Different sources weight categories differently (Numbeo, Mercer, Expatistan all use slightly different baskets) and survey different consumer profiles. Use our figures for directional comparison, not precise budgeting.
